I've heard that duplicate homepages are bad for SEO, is this true? How can I avoid this problem?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. What I mean is duplication of the page by the CMS or for other technical reasons rather than simply putting the same content on different pages. How does this affect the site?

Do you mean duplicate home page as one that appears in stats as www and one that doesn't have the www prefix?

If so, you can avoid this problem by ensuring any links use one or the other. When Google splits the stats that may negatively affect your SERPs.

Wouldn't it be better just to redirect one version?

use the google interface to specify which is the main one and to ignore the rest.....but also try to ensure your site uses the correct linkage throughout.....if you are also building links ensure they dont further confuse it.

basically it comes down to good base programming
