sitemap.xml will only be beneficial if you know what your are doing with it, if you do it wrong you could end up causing more problems and actually stop the bots crawling some of your site.

Google will crawl / index your site so long as there is at least 1 link pointing to it (unless your sitemap.xml tells them not to of course).

The crawling process by which search engines index the Web is slow and resource intensive. Site maps provide a way for Web sites to specify what aspects of its contents are actually indexed for searching. They are created as simple text files formatted as XML, but there are plenty of tools available to assist you with their creation. At this time, they only serve as an addition to the current process.

Nonsense. A sitemap XML will not cause bots to stop crawling your site. Just list every page that you want indexed and use the XML schema for Sitemap Protocol http://www.sitemaps.org/protocol.php It's not exactly rocket science.

I think you might be confusing a sitemap XML for a robots.txt Rolling Eyes

not at all yeahba, u can set variables within the sitemap xml to crawl less frequently or exclude certain pages so an inexperienced person could really mess up their crawl rate

I do agree its not rocket science but let someone in there that dont know what they are doing and it will mess it up!

Bear in mind so many people read forums then think they are SEO experts, mess about with things like xml site maps and totally mess up their sites.....there are so many factors to SEO that novices can mess with easily but a few mis guided edits ruin or even get their sites blacklisted.
